Unattended Operation for Garage Door Openers

It’s essential to evaluate the safety of your home. What about the safety of your garage? If you live in a house with family members, recognizing and going over the danger a garage door can have is vital to keep everyone safe. Now that smartphones have become more prevalent in opening and closing garage doors, there are safety requirements for unattended operations for garage door openers. When smartphones are used to operate a garage door, it’s referred to as “unattended operation.” This is because the person operating the door may not be near the moving door. When a person operating the door is in the immediate vicinity, they can observe the area and determine if it is safe to run. Operating a garage door via smartphone can allow the user to open in almost any place they are. They are not able to see if the area can cause danger.

Here are some of the safety practices that are used for unattended operating doors. Before closing the door from an unattended location, an audible alert in the garage must sound for at least five seconds. The sound is helpful, especially when using timers on garage doors. When using a timer to control the door, the user does not need to press a local wall or remote control. It will close automatically when the door timer finished. In addition to an audible alarm, a visual alert must flash for 5 seconds as well. In case there is an obstruction in the way of closing the door, a 2-strike lockout will happen. This lockout is if the door does not fully close after two attempts, the system must lockout and ignore additional efforts to close the unattended system. This can be easily reset if someone from the immediate vicinity uses a local control, such as the wall mount or remote control, to move the door again.

Having new technology to operate your home is excellent! But it’s essential to make sure that you can use it safely. Making sure your garage door is safe is a priority. If you have any other questions regarding and unattended operation garage door, please contact us.
