Garage doors are one of the most important features for a home’s curb appeal. Often, they are the entryway into our homes. Unfortunately garage doors can be the most overlooked appliance. Since most doors are made to be durable and long lasting, many people do not take the time to understand what it takes to keep a garage door running smoothly.

Garage Door Maintenance Tips

The Team at Cressy Door and Fireplace has put together a few tips on garage door maintenance just in time for Spring.

  1. Wood Garage Doors

If your garage door is made of a wood product, be sure to check for water damage on the surface and joints. If you find damage, you need to have it repaired immediately. You might also check to see if the paint is peeling. For this type of damage, simply scrape, sand and repaint.

  2. Steel Garage Doors

If your garage door is made of steel, check for rust spots on the surface and joints. If you find rust, you may sand, prime and paint for a quick repair. For more serious damage, it’s wise to get the advice of a professional.

  3. Rollers

Rollers are what make the garage doors open and close. Check to see if they are damaged or cracked. If you find damage, call a professional to have them serviced as soon as possible. Garage doors without roller damage should be lubricated with an appropriate lubricant.

  4. Tracks

Every garage door has a track for its rollers. The tracks need to be properly aligned in order for the door to operate smoothly. If you find the track out of alignment, have it evaluated by a professional.

  5. Cables and Springs

Not all garage doors have cables or springs. The ones that do should be checked on a regular basis for signs of stress or rust. If you seen any sign of stress or rust, have your doors evaluated by a garage door professional. Garage doors with broken cables or springs can cause serious injury, even death.

  6. Weather Seal

The final item on our checklist is the weather seal on your garage door. To evaluate its state, simply lift the garage door completely and check the weather stripping on the bottom of the door. If it needs replacing, measure the width and length of your door and purchase the appropriate weather stripping from your local hardware store.

We hope these garage door tips will help you have a safe and healthy spring! If you have any questions or need service, don’t hesitate to contact the team at Cressy Door and Fireplace.
