Choosing A Commercial Door

Which type of door should you specify? Select the door type that best fits your project needs by using this helpful guide.

  • Sectional Doors
Commercial sectional doors are appropriate when thermal efficiency is a concern, where window space is desired for light or visibility, or simply for aesthetic reasons. Sectional doors also operate quietly and generate little noise in windy applications. They require significant backroom or headroom, depending on the application. This product family includes thermal, ribbed, rail and stile, and raised panel doors.

    • Steel Thermal Doors
Ideal for applications requiring thermal efficiency and windload resistance, thermal doors come in a variety of thicknesses and different insulation types. Because of their construction - insulation sandwiched between two steel skins - they also offer the most durability, structural integrity and soundproofing of any sectional door.
    • Steel Ribbed Doors
Specified for a variety of commercial and industrial applications, steel ribbed doors are available with or without insulation and with a variety of back cover options. Steel ribbed doors without insulation are ideal for environments where temperature control is not a factor. Although not as effective as a thermal door, adding insulation creates a more thermally efficient and quietly operating door.
    • Aluminum Rail & Stile Doors
Generally specified for auto service centers and fire stations, these doors are mostly glass and, therefore, provide excellent visibility. They are also the most design versatility of all sectional doors, as almost any glass style can be used and a large variety of colors and finishes are available for the rails and stiles.
    • Steel Raised Panel Doors
When a "residential" appearance is desired, steel raised panel doors can be selected. These are the same door sections as are available in our residential product line, however, commercial-grade springs and hardware are added for extra performance and durability.
  • Rolling Doors
Commercial rolling doors are appropriate in demanding environments requiring maximum durability and security. Because of minimal backroom, headroom and sideroom requirements, rolling doors are able to fit in tight spaces not appropriate for sectional doors. Constructed of interlocking slats that wind around a barrel, the rolling door family includes service doors and counter shutters. Security grilles also fit into this category.

    • Rolling Service Doors
Available in a variety of materials - steel, stainless steel and aluminum - and slat thicknesses, rolling service doors are often found in the harshest industrial environments because of their extreme durability and reliability. If damaged, individual slats can be replaced rather than entire door sections in a sectional door.
    • Rolling Counter Shutters
Ideal for a variety of commercial, retail, institutional or office environments, rolling counter shutters provide the ability to securely close access to an area when not in use. Slat materials include steel, aluminum, or stainless steel, which is popular in food service applications.
    • Rolling Security Grilles
Rolling security grilles are popular in retail environments where unobstructed views of merchandise are desired, but protection against theft and vandalism is required. The grille is constructed of aluminum rods and is available in different patterns and spacing distances.
  • Fire Doors
Featuring some of the same construction characteristics as rolling doors, commercial fire doors are specified in facilities that require a listed fire door in a rated fire wall. Fire doors are normally provided with fusible links that automatically release to close the door at 165 F. Smoke and heat detectors or a building's alarm system can also trigger the door's descent. The fire door family includes both service doors and counter shutters.

  • Traffic Doors
Similar in construction to a rolling service door, traffic doors feature a high-strength fabric, rather than a metal, curtain. This allows for doors to achieve faster speeds when traveling, which make them ideal for high cycle applications. Also, if contact is made with the door forcing it out of its guides, it is easily replaced without a service call.
